Soleil's Story

2024 Update:

Soleil lives with her mother and six siblings in the Kamabuye Sector. Ten years ago, her father left the family and remarried a woman in Tanzania, leaving Soleil's mother to raise the children on her own. Later, her mother remarried, but her second husband also abandoned them. As a result, the family has been struggling to make ends meet. Their house is very old and has been damaged by rain, and it is at risk of collapsing at any moment. To ensure their safety, AOF staff decided to rent a temporary house for the family, as their living conditions were hazardous. Local leaders in the Cell are aware of the situation but have not provided any support.

The family owns a small plot of land where they grow crops for their own consumption. To support her children, Soleil's mother also works as a day laborer, doing farm work for others. The family is in urgent need of assistance, particularly with renovating their house and providing education for Soleil’s siblings. Additionally, they have the capacity to care for goats, which could be a potential source of income for them. The family is in great need of support and care to improve their living conditions and well-being.

2025 Update:

Soleil now lives with her mother and siblings in a newly built home, thanks to the generous support of the African Oasis Foundation. This new house has been a blessing for the family, bringing them much-needed stability. No longer having to rent or rely on borrowed shelter, they are now able to focus on their lives and work with peace of mind. The family no longer faces the constant worry of their house collapsing, as their old home had been damaged by rain and was in danger of falling apart.

Soleil is now able to study and attend school with greater ease. She has a dedicated space to do her homework and revise her lessons in the evenings. She also participates regularly in Saturday activities, which has been beneficial to her growth and development. Soleil is grateful for this opportunity too.

Although the family’s situation has improved, Soleil’s mother still struggles to provide for her children. She works as a day laborer, digging for other people to earn money. Despite these difficulties, the family remains hopeful and thankful for the new home, which they now consider a miracle.

The African Oasis Foundation’s help has made a tremendous difference in their lives, providing not just a house but a sense of security and stability. Soleil’s family is incredibly grateful for this new chapter and expresses their deep thanks for all the support they've received.

While their immediate shelter needs have been met, the family still faces other challenges, such as accessing an income generating project like goats, obtaining school materials for Soleil’s siblings, and further improving their livelihood. However, with the new house in place, they are better positioned to overcome these challenges and continue working toward a brighter future. The family remains hopeful and determined to create a better life for themselves, with the support of the African Oasis Foundation.
